Andrew Paul Gmitter, Sr.

Andy was born in Pennsylvania to Anna and Joseph Gmitter. He was a lifelong resident until July 2023 when his life changed after the passing of his "lady friend" of 30 plus years, Esther Socha.

Due to previous issues, his lifetime home was abruptly taken away from him. So he loaded up and came South where he was reunited with four children, eight (of ten) grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He spent his days riding to Dollar Tree for cookies or if it was a doctor appointment day, he would be out riding with his best buddy, Steve Belew. They loved to visit Jackie's, Johnny's, and Roundie's in Hopkinsville. In his free time he enjoyed sitting in the office with the grands and great-grands or on his porch with the neighborhood children bringing him treats and calling him grandpa.

He spent his early years as a Postal Mail Carrier in Delaware. He was also an electrician at Tobyhanna Army Depot, using the trade he learned at Thaddeus Stevens Trade School, where he also played football and boxed. His later years he was also an Over the Road truck driver.

He is survived by one sister, Anna Markus, of Royersford, PA; children: Connie Gmitter and Andy Gmitter of Hopkinsville, KY, Celeste (Dan) Zydel and Josette (Joe) Belew of Clarksville, TN, and Andrea Weichman of PA.

A memorial will be planned for a later date in Pennsylvania.

A 50+ luncheon will be held in his honor on December 19, 2025 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the Oak Grove Community Center, 1601 Thompsonville Lane, Oak Grove, KY.
